L. * Department of Physiology, ICHS Manipal, Department of Anatomy * , and Physiology * , KMC, Mangalore and Department of Pharmacology * , KMC, Manipal. India The genotoxic effect of dacarbazine, a cell cycle nonspecific antineoplastic agent, has been studied in germ cell by sperm shape abnormality assay. Animals n 5 ; were injected IP ; 5, 25, 50 mg kg dacarbazine for 5 consecutive days with 24 hours interval. A group of 5 animals received 0.1 ml of distilled water, which served as controls. Animals were sacrificed on 35 th day following last dose, the testis and epididymes were removed and placed in phosphate buffered saline PBS ; . The epididymes was minced in PBS at pH 7.2, filtered and stained with 1% eosin Y for 30 minutes. Smears were prepared on clean glass slides and air dried. Slides were analyzed for a total 1000 sperms animal and classified into normal and different type of abnormal forms. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney `U' test. The abnormal forms were 13.6 + 4.3., 14.0 + 6.0., 15.6 + 2.6 and 14.2 + 3.42 for control, 5, 25, 50 mg kg dacarbazine treated respectively. There was no significant difference between control and treated group p 0.05 ; The result reveals that dacarbazine is not genotoxic at these dose levels on this sample time. 192. Infarction. Besides, only one time point after infarction was studied. The immunohistochemical and electrophysiological studies were not performed until 4 wk after infarction. Future research should identify early events, such as myocardial inflammation, and trace their progression after the administration of drugs. In conclusion, our present work provided the first evidence that both ARBs and statins use different actions to exert a similar effect on attenuation of cardiac hypertrophy and cardiac fibrosis in a manner independent of their antihypertensive and hypolipidemic effects. The combination therapy of ARB and statin is associated with an additive beneficial effect on ventricular remodeling than each alone. Because cardiac hypertrophy is hard to normalize by either ARBs or statins alone, the present study proposes a good indication for combination therapy with ARB and statin against cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction. Characterization of the cardioprotective mechanisms provides a rationale for the future design of combination drugs in the secondary prevention of coronary artery disease.

Cardiac aldosterone level increased in DHF, it was much low as compared with corticosterone. The pathophysiological significance of the increased local aldosterone level in DHF remains unclear, and future studies are required to clarify a principal agonist to mineralocorticoid receptor in the LV myocardium of DHF. Previous studies 12, 18, 22, ; demonstrated beneficial effects of mineralocorticoid receptor blockade in systolic heart failure with systolic dysfunction and LV dilatation. are several medications to improve the prognosis of patients with systolic heart failure including spironolactone, and one of principal mechanisms of the effective pharmacological interventions is the prevention or reversal of LV dilatation 8, 34, 36 however, DHF is not associated with LV dilatation, and the reverse LV remodeling is not expected in the treatment of DHF. Although ACE inhibitor is effective in both systolic heart failure and DHF model There.

This work is a case study of strategic bombing campaigns to which Pape applies a controversial model of coercion, defined in such manner as to ignore almost any result of strategic bombing other than surrender of the enemy. His analysis of the European bombing campaign, whatever its merits, is flawed by a careless attention to detail, such as dating the Butt report to August 1942 268, n. 35 ; , which tends to bring Pape's conclusions into doubt and dactinomycin.

JN-501-2002-R1 8 The edges of the zones of BDA terminal labeling were remarkably sharp. The terminal fields could therefore be traced with a high degree of accuracy. The regions of dense labeling were traced in 22 equally spaced sections through the caudate in 3 hemispheres. Seven representative sections from C21 FEFsac injection and FEFsem injections ; , C22 FEFsem injection ; , and C23 FEFsem injection ; are shown in Fig. 4. The FEFsem sections from monkeys C22 and C23 were selected to be at approximately the same levels of the caudate as the sections from monkey C21. The sections with FEFsem terminals were reversed as necessary see Table 1 ; to permit each FEFsem section to be superimposed on the corresponding FEFsac section from C21. All terminal field outlines are taken from BDA cases except for the FEFsem fields from C21, which are from a WGA-HRP injection. It is obvious from inspection that the areas of the FEFsem terminal fields are comparable in area to the areas of the FEFsac terminal fields, indicating that signals from the visual pursuit subregion of the FEF have the opportunity to exert a strong influence on the caudate nucleus. Furthermore, although there is some overlap between the FEFsem and FEFsac terminal fields, particularly in some more posterior sections, there is a strong tendency for the FEFsem fields to be located more laterally than the FEFsac fields. DISCUSSION The primary result of this study is the observation of a large direct projection from the pursuit subregion of the FEF to the caudate nucleus. A projection from the FEFsac to the caudate is well established Graybiel and Ragsdale, 1979; Leichnetz and Gonzalo-Ruiz, 1996; Stanton et al., 1988 ; , but the FEFsem-to-caudate pathway has not been previously described. Our finding that the FEFsem projection to the caudate is equivalent in both density and area to that of the FEFsac suggests that, in addition to its well-known role in controlling saccadic eye.
TENSION DEVELOPMENT in intact skeletal muscle fibers after stimulation is preceded by an increase of fiber stiffness that begins during the latent period and continues throughout the whole rise in both twitch and tetanic contractions 6, 8, 12 ; . Previous work 3, 5 ; has shown that a small portion of the muscle stiffness increase arises from a sarcomere structure s ; , outside the cross bridges, whose stiffness increases upon stimulation. This non-cross-bridge stiffness contributes very little to the stiffness of the muscle fiber at moderate or high tension; however, it represents the whole muscle stiffness increase occurring during the latent period and a substantial fraction at very low tension. The presence of this stiffness was demonstrated by studying the force response to fast ramp stretches and hold, applied to a single muscle fiber at various tension levels during a twitch or a tetanus. It was found that force, after the fast transient synchronous with the stretch, settled to a steady level greater than the isometric tension preceding the stretch, until relaxation or until the fiber was returned to the original length. Because of this characteristic, the excess of tension with respect to isometric tension was referred to as static tension, whereas the ratio between static tension and stretch amplitude, measured at sarcomere level, was termed static stiffness. Experiments made on tetanic contractions in Ringer containing 1 6 mM 2, 3-butanedione monoxime and dalteparin.

TALTRINE SUPPLEMENTATION MODIFIES ETHANOL REINFORCING EFFECTS IN A PLACE CONDITIONING DESIGN. E Qucrtemont, V Goffaux, C Wolf and P De Witte Biologie du Comportemcnt, Lovain-La-Neuve, Belgium Our recent studies showed that a single ethanol injection induces a significant increase in taunne microdialv sate content of specific rat brain regions which possibly participates in the physiological adaptation to acute ethanol intoxication. In the present studies we have investigated whether oral taurine supplementation would influence the rewarding and aversive effects of two ethanol doses with a modified place preference conditioning procedure Male Wistar rats were trained to associate the vinegar odour with an ethanol 0.3 or 2.0 g kg ; or saline injection during a two week period 8 injections ; . During this time, 50% rats were dairy supplemented with taurine 0.5 g kg day ; in their drinking bottles. During the test session, the rats moved freely in a two-compartment box for 20 minutes after which the vinegar odour stimulus was introduced into one side of the box. The place preference of each rat was recorded for the following 20 minutes. Naive rats conditioned with large ethanol doses 2.0 g kg ; showed a significant aversion to the vinegar stimulus whereas after low ethanol doses 0.3 g kg ; the rats displayed neither preference nor aversion. However, taurine supplementation significantly decreased the aversion induced by 2.0 g kg ethanol, while the taunne-supplemented rats conditioned with low ethanol doses demonstrated a significant preference for the vinegar stimulus These results are in accordance with the hypothesis that taurine participates in the physiological adaptation to acute ethanol intoxication by decreasing the ethanol aversive effect which is thought to override the rewarding action of ethanol and damiana.

Defining Literacy in the Indian Context The National Literacy Mission NLM ; , the most important state mechanism for imparting NFE, defines literacy as acquiring the skills of reading, writing and arithmetic and the ability to apply them to one's day-to-day life. Thus the goal of the NLM goes beyond the simple achievement of self-reliance in literacy and numeracy of functional literacy. The achievement of functional literacy implies: Self-reliance in the 3 Rs. Becoming aware of the causes of deprivation and moving towards amelioration of their condition by participating in the process of development Acquiring skills to improve their economics status and general well-being Imbibing values of national integration, conservation of environment, women's equality, and observance of small family norms. The acquisition of functional literacy results in empowerment and a definite improvement in the quality of life. It helps to ensure the participation of the masses in sharing the benefits of the information era nlm.nic.in ; . Poverty and equity comprise major distinctive elements of the conceptualisation. The 3 Rs have been characterized in the NLM thus: Reading Reading aloud, with normal accent, and at a speed of 30 words a minute, a simple passage on a topic of interest to the learner. Silent reading at 35 words a minute, of small paragraphs in simple language. Reading with understanding the road signs, posters, simple instructions and newspapers broadsheets designed for neo-literates. Ability to follow simple written passages relating to one's working and living environment Writing Copying, with understanding, 7 words a minute. Taking dictation at 5 words a minute. Writing with proper spacing and alignment. Writing independently, short letters and applications, and filling in forms of day-today use to the learner Numeracy Reading and writing numerals 1-100. Doing simple calculations without fraction ; involving addition and subtraction up to 3 digits, and multiplication and division by 2 digits. Working knowledge of metric units weights, measures currency, distance, area and unit of time. Broad idea of proportion and interests not involving fractions ; and their use in practical situations. : nlm.nic.in ; Life Skills Education The concept of life skills education as the focus of all educational programmes and processes has been adopted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development MHRD ; , Government of India and danaparoid.
The American Cancer Society estimates nearly 213, 000 new cases and nearly 41, 000 deaths from breast cancer in 2006 PDQ 2006a; American Cancer Society 2006 ; . It is the most common malignancy in U.S. women, and the second most common cause of death from cancer after lung cancer ; . While the incidence of breast cancer has increased over the past several decades, mortality apparently is decreasing, which likely is attributable to the combination of earlier detection through increased use of mammography screening.

| Generic DacarbazinePatients undergoing various types of surgical procedures, such as orthopedic, gynecological-obstetrical, urological, neurosurgical, and general surgical procedures are at high risk for developing DVT and PE. Of these groups, orthopedic patients appear to be especially prone to thrombosis, particularly patients with hip fracture. All elective orthopedic surgical patients undergoing lower extremity surgery are at risk for DVT. The risk is greatest for patients undergoing hip surgery and knee reconstruction, for which DVT rates range from 45 to 70 percent. Patients with various types of medical diseases, usually chronic, are also at a high risk for venous thrombotic events. The risk of DVT in pregnancy has been reported to be five times higher than in nonpregnant patients in the same age group and may be increased postpartum. A silent DVT may cause a postphlebitic syndrome. Up to 800, 000 Americans have or have had venous ulceration. The postphlebitic syndrome can result in significant loss of workdays for these patients. A frequent complication of DVT is PE, which can obstruct blood flow to the lungs and cause sudden death without signs or symptoms. It is often not possible to recognize DVT until it is too late. More than 80 percent of patients who died from a pulmonary embolism showed DVT on autopsy.
