This is a remarkable record in the sixth year of depression. Yet there is much t o be done, especially in persuading our Associate members t o change t o Active or Inst~tutional. I have often wondered if our approach t o prospective members is not wrong. How many of us in our zeal t o secure a new member mention only the Associate membership rather than setting forth in detail the advantages and privileges incident to Institutional or Active membership. I recently rcceived a report on seven people who said that they woutd have joined t h e Association if they had been asked; that they would take a .00 membership if they had not been told of the cheaper one, and if they had been glven a better idea of the value of our magazine. After examination of several issues, they all reported that the magazine alone would have been good return for their .00 membership. I convinced this is not an isolated incident but fairly typical. Means of a spreader. Inocula taken from a broth culture can be more evenly spread than those from cultures on solid media and will, therefore, yield more consistent results. Squares, smaller than the coverslips used, are cut from the freshly inoculated plate by means of a flamed knife or a Hagedorn needle. The squares are placed, inoculated side downwards, upon the coverslips. The Petri dishes containing the coverslip micro-cultures are incubated at the temperature required in a moist chamber which ought to close fairly tightly to allow for even humidity throughout. After growth has progressed to the stage desired, the micro-cultures are fixed and stained as described later. It is not necessary to grow the bacteria between agaT and the coverslip for all purposes. When dealing with ordinary bacteria, good staining results may be obtained when the squares are cut from cultures already developed to the point desired. However, the coverslip should not be pressed down on the medium and lifted up, a manipulation which involves gross displacement; a cut-out piece placed cautiously on the coverslip is always preferable. Yet it should be realized that when dealing with soft and fragile material and when very fine detail of structure is desired, the micro-culture is the best method. Only sparsely grown cultures will yield the required one-cell layer. Yet the periphery of colonies or the growth developing on the coverslip in the humid zone round the edge of the agar square often supply suitable material for the study of older growth. The development in this zone may be encouraged by running a drop of liquid round the edge of the freshly inoculated square or by using a medium of soft consistency. It must be realized that suitable growth on the coverslip of the organism under observation is of greater importance than the fixing and staining methods applied later and that each new subject studied involves a little ingenuity to ensure the necessary flat, thin, and wellspaced growth on the coverslip.

Analysis deride its scientific aspirations, the steady accumulation of insights over time resembles scientific progress. Doctrinal, philosophical, and critical scholarship by contrast has been static. The authors agree or disagree, and about the same things, as much today as they did twenty or thirty years ago. Yet there are grounds for concern about the economic analysis of contract law. Careful students of its history know that the sense of convergence ended years ago; in the last ten years, theory has become divergent, and impasses have emerged. The simple models that dominated discussion prior to the 1990s do not predict observed contract doctrine. The more complex models that emerged in the 1980s and dominated discussion in the 1990s failed to predict doctrine or relied on variables that could not, as a practical matter, be measured. As a result, the predictions of these models are indeterminate, and the normative recommendations derived from them are implausible. For these reasons, I will argue that economic analysis has failed to produce an "economic theory" of contract law, and does not seem likely to be able to do so. By this, I mean that the economic approach does not explain the current system of contract law, nor does it provide a solid basis for criticizing and reforming contract law. This is not to say that the economic approach has not produced any wisdom, but that the nature of its accomplishment turns out to be subtle and will become clear only after an extended discussion. This Essay has two purposes: to document the failures of economic models to explain contract law or to justify reform, and to provide an explanation for these failures. The explanation centers on the difficulty of developing a model of contractual behavior that can be tested and that does not make unreasonable assumptions about the cognitive abilities of contractual parties. At the outset, a few comments must be made in order to avoid some possible misunderstandings of the argument. First, I will not argue that some other approach to contract law is superior to the economic approach, nor that economic analysis should be abandoned. If a moral must be extracted from the discussion, it is skepticism about how much additional value economics has to offer to understanding contract law today. Second, I do not make claims about the value of economic analysis for understanding other areas of law. The Science of Human Variation Scientists and nonscientists frequently refer to four or five racial groups, each of which encompasses millions of people. Folk beliefs about race incorporate the assumption that racial categories reflect dramatic, underlying, essential differences among racial groups. To many observers, individuals of different races look and act very differently from each other, and these observable differences must reflect some fundamental, underlying causal mechanism-- genetics. From its origins in the scientific literature, race was conceptualized as an intrinsic feature of persons who share distinctive physical characteristics; racial groups have represented natural boundaries within which people are essentially similar and between which people are essentially different. Human races are often analogized to families, implying a fundamental affinity and close, shared descent among all members of any one race Marks, 2002 ; . A recent article in Demography described races as "genetic entities" that arose because "generations of reproductive isolation have led to differences in gene frequency across racial groups" Van Den Oord & Rowe, 2000, p. 286 ; . Another recent article noted that "Race distinguishes major groups of people according to their ancestry and a more or less distinctive combination of physical characteristics. Race is most often used to differentiate a population related by blood, common descent, or heredity" Edwards, Fillingim, & Keefe, 2001, p. 134 ; . The preceding definitions imply that races are coherent, genetically structured collectives that exist in nature independent of human choices about how and why researchers categorize people. They imply a simplistic model of human migration and expansion throughout the world, a model in which small groups of humans traveled to each continent at about the same time, became reproductively isolated and then expanded rapidly to fill the continent in the absence of subsequent events that would create significant within-race patterns of human genetic variation--a nice "just so story" that is largely consistent with folk beliefs about race, but a story that is contradicted by data from anthropology and human genetics. Assumptions about natural, essential boundaries among races are contradicted by the findings that allele frequency comparisons among human populations rarely show discontinuities that map onto racial boundaries Marks, 2002; Molnar, 1998 ; . Anthropologists long ago discovered that humans' physical traits vary gradually, with groups that are close geographic neighbors being more similar than groups that are geographically separated. This pattern of variation, known as clinal variation, is also observed for many alleles that vary from one human group to another. Another observation is that traits or alleles that vary from one group to another do not vary at the same.
Stability and obedience to Beer's Law. The effect of molybdate concentration on complex formation was studied. The solutions of this reagent were evaluated in the following concentrations: 2.5 x 10-2, 5.0 x 10-2, 1.0 x 10-1, 2.5 x 10-1, 5.0 x 10-1, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0% m v-1 ; . The 1.0% ammonium molybdate solution was found to be sufficient for providing maximum and reproducible colour intensity. The effect of pH on the formation and on the stability of the complex was studied over the range 1.0 9.0. The absorbance of the product formed was found to remain unchanged at pH 3.5 7.5. All the absorbance measurements were obtained in solutions contained standards or samples with pH in the range 4.5 6.5. The stability of the product formed in the optimum conditions above mentioned was investigated. The data given in Table 1 shows that full colour development is immediate at room temperature 251 C ; and the values of absorbances of the product formed were found to remain unchanged after standing for 24 hours at room temperature. This product was stable in the temperature range of 20 60 oC. However, a temperature of 25 C was choice for the absorbance measurements and guaifenesin.

Accuracy of the lattice Boltzmann LB ; method for micro-scale flows with finite Knudsen numbers is investigated. We employ up to eleventh-order Gauss-Hermite quadrature and a diffuse-scattering boundary condition for fluid-wall interactions. Detailed comparisons with the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo DSMC ; method and the linearized Boltzmann equation are made for planar Couette and Poiseuille flows. With a consistent definition of the Knudsen number, the slip coefficients of the LB equation with the standard D2Q9 scheme are found to be slightly larger than those of the Boltzmann equation with the same boundary condition, which makes the standard LB method remain quantitatively accurate only for small Knudsen numbers. While all higher-order LB methods considered here perform better than the standard LB method, accuracy of the LB hierarchy does not monotonically increase with the order of the Gauss-Hermite quadrature.
