The paucity of technical and analytical studies of that system, it becomes readily apparent w h y the present study by Mortensen and Wagner is an important contribution. For in this monograph the authors try to identify the entire system of education associated with U N R its functioning and likely contribution not only to the Palestinians but to those concerned with imparting education to refugee populations elsewhere. In other words, the authors are as concerned with the relevance of that system to populations w h o similar situation. It is appropriate at this juncture to indicate both the major impetus of the study as well as the methodology employed to provide the kind of answers the authors were seeking. T h e authors indicate quite clearly that their objective in carrying out the study is essentially two-fold: first, 'research into the U N R programme would reveal m a n useful lessons on possible ways of educating refugees', and, second, to assess 'those educational techniques . which might usefully be transferred to other settings'. T o accomplish their purpose of conveying the extent of the U N R system, the authors relied essentially on two principal sources: first, they assembled available data, statistical or qualitative, published or unpublished. T h u they availed themselves of the rich statistical resources published by Unesco and U N R examined technical reports available at U N headquarters in Vienna as well as in Paris, and so forth. Equally important, the authors undertook afieldtrip to the principal areas of U N operation excepting Lebanon, for obvious reasons ; . T h spoke with U N R field officers, inspected some schools and interviewed several key personnel involved in the operation. T h e results of this careful approach are n o w embodied in this straightforward monograph. T h e authors convey theirfindingsin the light of a threefold schema: one part of the monograph is essentially descriptive in which the authors recapitulate the origin and development of the U N R system of education since 1950, its administrative structure, the kind of population it was intended to serve and serves, the environmental factors that affected the educational system and the interaction of the system with the host countries where the refugee population was to be found. Another part of the monograph is essentially analytical in which the authors analyse the difficulties, highlight the problems, educational and otherwise, and relate educational innovation to the growing needs and c o m plexities that developed over time. T h e last part of the monograph is essentially evaluative where the authors try to assess the meaning of that educational experiment, where the relevance of the techniques developed by U N the specific environment of the Middle East is discussed in terms of its applicability to other regions of the world. [Free drug concentration is generally accepted as a more accurate reflection of the active concentration 5j.l The object of this study was to define concentrationeffect and dose-response relationships for the clinical administration of IV lidocaine for neuropathic pain states of varying etiology. The setting and the administration of IV lidocaine for this study was kept as close as possible to clinical practice. The correlation of free versus total serum concentrations of lidocaine and various stages of analgesia was also investigated.

The objective of this work was to investigate in vitro the transdermal delivery of the major pharmacologically active compounds contained in guarana extract and halcion. Many of the current drugs used for weight loss are effective, particularly when used appropriately along with additional measures, including exercise and behavioral modification. The long-term effects of most of these medications have not been established. Most lose their effectiveness over time, thus requiring increased dosage, and some can become addictive. In addition, some of the psychostimulant agents have been associated with an increase in depression, which may be a particular problem, since depression is already common in obesity. It is unclear if the newer agents, sibutramine and orlistat, have this effect. ; None of these drugs deals with the underlying problems that may be causing obesity. Unless specifically instructed by a physician, people should use non-drug methods for losing weight. Except under rare circumstances, pregnant or nursing women should never take diet medications of any sort, including herbal and over-the-counter remedies. Over-the-Counter Drugs and Herbal Remedies A 2001 study reported that 7% of American adults use nonprescription weight-loss products. People must be cautious when using any weight-loss medications, including over-the counter diet pills and herbal or so-called natural remedies. Buying unverified products over the Internet can be particularly dangerous. Perhaps the best alternative advice for people who are overweight is to drink tea. Studies have indicated that regular tea drinking is associated with lower weight, particularly in people who drink it for years. Green tea specifically has been associated with increased energy expenditure. One study reported that people who took a green tea extract Exolise ; lost weight and reduced their waist size. Better.

Puumala hantavirus is the most common human hantavirus infection in Europe.1 2 It is transmitted to humans by inhalation or contamination of skin breaches by urine or faeces of infected bank voles. Infection ranges from subclinical to a severe influenzalike illness progressing to acute renal failure.3 We carried out a case-control study in an endemic area in France and Belgium to estimate knowledge of hantavirus and identify possible risk factors for infection.
3776 A RE-EXAMINATION OF THE WHIPLASH-ASSOCIATED DISORDERS WAD ; AS A SYSTEMIC ILLNESS Robert Ferrari, Anthony S. Russell, Linda M. Carroll, J. David Cassidy University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario ; Objective To describe the systemic nature of the illness reported after motor vehicle collisions using data from a large, population-based cohort of individuals making an injury insurance claim. Methods We examined all subjects who submitted a claim or were treated for whiplash injury following motor vehicle collision in Saskatchewan, Canada during an 18-month period. Demographics of claimants, collision-related data, pre-collision health data, symptom prevalence, and Short Form-36 scores were obtained on average within 1 month post-collision. Results Obtained and Conclusion Of 9006 potentially eligible claimants, 7462 83 percent ; met criteria for whiplash injury and provided information regarding demographics and injury-related symptoms. A total of 45% of these consented to complete the Short Form 36 at baseline. For most subjects, neck pain was only one of many diffuse and intense symptoms, including, often, low back pain. The range of symptoms including fatigue, dizziness, paresthesiae, headache, spinal pain, nausea, and jaw pain could be interpreted as a systemic disorder. SF-36 scores showed low physical and mental functioning one month post-collision. Brief Conclusion: What is commonly referred to as whiplash-associated disorders WAD ; is best appreciated as a syndrome extending itself well beyond what can be labeled as a neck injury. More research is needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms involved so that treatment can be directed at the broad spectrum of the illness rather than focusing on finding a focal neck injury and hemocyte.
